Episode 9 finally pushes the biggest question surrounding Seo-ri and Dan-sim to the front. Se-gye confronts Seo-ri about her identity and wants to know who Dan-sim really is. For Seo-ri, this is a difficult moment because the secret she has been carrying cannot remain hidden forever.
The episode forces her to confront her own past as well. Dan-sim’s memories, her experiences in Joseon and her new life as Seo-ri are all becoming increasingly difficult to separate. The more she becomes emotionally attached to Se-gye, the more frightening the possibility of losing her modern life becomes.
Se-gye’s decision to confront her is also important because it shows that his feelings have developed beyond attraction. He wants to understand her, even when the truth sounds impossible.
The emotional side of the romance becomes much stronger here. Instead of simply asking whether Se-gye and Seo-ri like each other, the drama asks whether their relationship can survive the truth about who Seo-ri really is.
By the end of the episode, Seo-ri has to make an important decision about her relationship with Se-gye. The answer pushes the story directly toward the major revelations of Episode 10.
