The Scarecrow Episode 1 Review

The Scarecrow begins with an atmosphere of uneasiness, introducing a detective whose professional troubles are closely connected to unresolved memories from his past. Kang Tae-joo’s return to Kangseong is not the fresh start he might have hoped for. Having been demoted after his superior’s arrest, he arrives in a place where old experiences and uncomfortable relationships quickly become impossible to ignore.

The situation involving a former convict who has been beaten gives Tae-joo an immediate reason to investigate. What initially appears to be a local incident soon raises questions about the people involved and the possibility that the truth is more complicated than the first explanations suggest. Tae-joo’s instincts push him to look beyond appearances, establishing the investigative approach that drives the series.

His reunion with Cha Si-young is another major turning point. Their history as schoolmates creates a personal conflict that goes beyond professional rivalry. Si-young’s outwardly friendly attitude contrasts with the painful memories Tae-joo carries, making their interaction uncomfortable even when neither openly discusses the past.

Park Hae-soo gives Tae-joo a restrained intensity, portraying a man who has learned to keep his frustrations under control while remaining deeply affected by injustice. The first episode establishes the show’s central themes of memory, power, and the difficulty of separating personal history from professional responsibility.

Overall, Episode 1 is an effective introduction to a crime thriller built around a troubled detective, an uneasy reunion, and a murder investigation that promises to expose much more than a single criminal act. It creates enough tension and unanswered questions to make the next episode feel essential.
