Episode Review

When Getting Into Medical School Becomes an Obsession

Episode 8 takes us into one of the most competitive academic environments in the series. The setting is Seungyeon High School, a prestigious school known for producing students who go on to medical school. And this episode asks a difficult question: How much pressure is too much pressure?

The Pressure Starts Immediately

The episode opens with mandatory testing being introduced across schools. But the investigation quickly focuses on Seungyeon High because of concerns surrounding students and illegal pills. The school has extremely high academic standards. Students are expected to study constantly. Parents monitor their performance. Private tutoring is treated almost like a second school. And medical school is the ultimate goal.

Hyeon-min Collapses

A student named Jung Hyeon-min becomes the center of the case. During an examination, he suffers a nosebleed and collapses. Instead of allowing him to rest, his mother insists that he finish the examination. She gives him medication and encourages him to continue. Her reasoning is understandable from one perspective. She believes her son’s entire future depends on this exam. But the episode keeps asking where parental ambition becomes dangerous pressure.

The Pills

The investigation eventually reveals that the pills aren’t simply ordinary medication. There is something much bigger happening. The ERPB starts connecting the students’ behavior with illegal substances. And Hwa-jin begins looking at Hyeon-min’s mother more closely. She appears obsessed with her son’s academic success. Everything revolves around one goal. Medical school.

The Problem With “Just One More Exam”

The episode does a good job showing how pressure can become normalized. Hyeon-min isn’t necessarily being forced into something that looks obviously violent. There is no traditional bully. Instead, the pressure comes through expectations. Study more. Sleep less. Take another pill. Finish another exam. Get a higher score. And eventually, the student doesn’t know how to stop.

Hwa-jin Investigates the Family

Hwa-jin realizes that the case isn’t only about the student. He needs to understand the adults around him. The more he investigates, the more evidence appears that illegal medication is connected to the academic environment. That changes the case from parental pressure into something much more serious.

The Bigger Conspiracy

By the end of the episode, the pills appear to be connected to a larger network. This is important because the season is beginning to connect its individual cases. What started as school bullying has now become an investigation involving drugs, criminal networks and students being used as part of the operation.

Final Thoughts

Episode 8 is one of the more uncomfortable episodes because the adults involved genuinely believe they are helping. That is what makes it disturbing. The mother isn’t presented as someone who simply wants to hurt her child. She wants him to succeed. But her definition of success has become so extreme that her son’s wellbeing has started becoming secondary. And that is exactly where the drama becomes interesting.

Episode 8 Rating: 8.3/10

A tense academic-pressure storyline that gradually develops into a larger drug investigation. The episode effectively shows how extreme expectations can become dangerous when nobody is willing to stop.
